This year's Symposium will be held Thursday, May 2nd, 2019, from 1pm-4:30pm in the Agard-Lovinggood Auditorium at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.
This year's keynote speaker will be Mr. Kiser Barnes, former member of the Universal House of Justice.
Mr. Kiser Barnes is a former member of the Universal House of Justice, the international governing institution of the Baha’i Faith, located in Haifa, Israel, on which he served from 2000 to 2013. Prior to this office, Mr. Barnes served at the Baha’i World Center as a member of the International Teaching Center (1993-2000). He lived in Africa with his family from 1976 to 1993, where he was a member of local, national, and international Baha’i administrative councils.
After earning his Juris Doctor degree, University of Maryland Law School (1974), he practiced civil-rights law in Maryland. He was Director, Community Relations, Maryland Human Relations Commission. He also served as Director, Maryland Affirmative Employment Project, in association with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Mr. Barnes was a Senior Lecturer and the Chairman of law departments at several Nigerian universities. Lecturing on American Law and Human Rights, he was Professor, Charles Hamilton Houston Lectures, Universite du Benin, Faculty of Law, Lomé, Togo.
Mr. Barnes’s publications include: “The Principle of Justice in Religion and Law: The True Basis for Religious Harmony,” a chapter in Religion and Peace in Multi-Faith Nigeria, J. Olupona (ed); “The Nature of Baha’i Law,” and “The Theme of Service in the Evolving World Order of Baha’u’llah,” published in Law and International Order (co-author) . His book, Cases and Materials on Nigerian Company Law (1994) was the first publication on the subject. He is the author of books and stories for children and youth.
Following the symposium, Mr. Barnes will also hold a talk on the subject of race unity in the United States and recent communications on this topic from the National Spiritual Assembly. This event will take place Thursday, May 2nd, at 7:30pm at the Austin Baha'i Center (2215 E M. Franklin Ave, Austin, TX 78723).
Both events are open to the public and are free to attend. Contributions will be accepted to further the mission of the Louis Gregory Race Unity Foundation, a Baha'i-inspired, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
